About Me

Meet Teacher Kara

Teacher Kara lives in New York State, USA and she has taught students from all over the world.                        Teacher Kara loves to teach and has been teaching for over 18 years, including 4+ years online.
In her experience, language learning is most successful when students receive individualized scaffolding and encouragement to listen, read, write and speak in English [or the foreign language being learned]. With this in mind, Teacher Kara’s classroom provides lessons that are both challenging and supportive, rigorous and fun.

Teacher Kara has Masters degrees in Education and Curriculum & Instruction.  She also has a 140 TESOL/TEFL certification and Teaching Business English. She can teach any student, from the youngest learners to adults; from beginners through fluent speakers.

My Story

Since 2000, I have been passionate about education and helping others improve their academic performance. I believe that with the correct tools and under the right guidance, everybody can succeed in their studies.

I use a variety of teaching methods in my class to make sure that everybody feels welcome, engaged and excited to learn. On top of that, I do my best to provide students with any help and support they need to get the best results. In my class, you will never be alone.

My Teaching Philosophy

Individualized, Scaffolded Lessons

Just as no shoe fits all, there is no one type of student! Each student is different in their personality, learning style and time to acquire language skills. I see that my students study English at school but need more practice. My focus in class is on having the student speak [or in the case of American Sign Language, sign]! In my experience, as students speak more, they become more comfortable and confident.  My goal is initially for student output to take the form of non-verbal expression [such as interacting with the slides, facial expressions/body language] and progressively move to repetition and finally independent output.

My Method

Communicative Language Teaching
Students will have lessons as described in the [Curriculum Options],

often on a theme [for example: animals, weather].
Students will learn vocabulary and grammar related to the theme.
Classes will focus on speaking skills, using the vocabulary and grammar learned.
Classes will be scaffolded to meet individual student need. Teacher might recommend level adjustment if student is having prolonged difficulty at target level
